The Princess and the Pea
A prince travelled the world far and wide to find himself a princess. There were certainly princesses enough along his path, but whether they were real princesses, well, that was really not so certain. There was always something that wasn’t quite right, and in the end, the prince returned crestfallen to his castle.
But one stormy night, a girl knocked – soaking wet – on the castle’s gates. The girl claimed she was a princess, but since she most certainly didn’t look like one, the old queen decided to test her.
The queen made a bed ready for the night, but laid a pea on the bottom of the bed and then piled 20 mattresses and 20 eider down duvets. It was on top all this that the unexpected guest was supposed to spend the night. On the next morning, the girl complained what a horrible night it had been. She had lain on something hard and was now black and blue all over her body.
It wasthen that the Court knew that she was a real princess as no one could be that sensitive without being a real princess. The prince took her for his wife, and the pea – well, the pea went to a museum!
